2020 Top Indie Must-Plays on Switch

Gamers have been chomping at the bit for every morsel of information leaked, rumored, and announced about the Switch for the entirety of 2020. Directs, mini Directs, Indie World events, and a multitude of online E3 replacements have happened during 2020, and will continue for the forseeable future.

Despite all this online traffic and 24/7 discussion about gaming, a large section of the industry (or at least the Twitterverse) claims there are [no] games for the Nintendo Switch this year.

Now of course, we all know that Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Paper Mario: The Origami King happened, and people have their opinions about those. But for most players, two games don’t make a dense, complete library (despite some hitting 700+ hours in AC). However, the Switch has had a surprising amount of quality independent games release in 2020, that fill all the holes the uninitiated don’t realize.

Exclusive Titles (not counting PC)

  • A Short Hike Adventure/Platformer; explorative fun with a unique art style and quality writing
  • Aviary Attorney:Definitive Visual Novel; like the Ace Attorney series, but weirder
  • Bug Fables – RPG; Paper Mario lite, check YouTube for myriad opinions
  • Deadly Premonition 2 – Survival Horror; “so bad it’s good” with a campy vibe
  • Florence – Visual Novel;
  • Good Job! – Action Puzzler; arcade-y puzzler that revels in wanton destruction
  • Inmost – Adventure; a creepy, intimate plot with three different character playstyles
  • Raji: An Ancient Epic – Adventure; an environmental puzzle adventure with Prince of Persia vibes
  • Summer in Mara – Adventure Sim; Animal Crossing alternative with some story and farming/village cultivating
  • Urban Flow Arcade Puzzle Sim; potentially stress inducing but simultaneously calming experience, great for quick plays

Non-Exclusive Gems

  • Carrion – Metroidvania; delightfully refreshing “reverse horror” adventure
  • Kentucky Route Zero – Multi-Genre Adventure; one of the best regarded games this generation
  • Panzer Dragoon Remake – On Rails Shooter; an absolute classic made smoother in visuals and playability
  • Super Mega Baseball 3 – Arcade Sports; the best baseball experience on Switch
  • Two Point Hospital – Simulator; goofy art and writing, but possibly the most prototypical simulator on the Switch

If you can’t find something that you’ll love from this list, well…gaming might not be for you. Nintendo has done a great job bringing both new and old titles from indie studios to the Switch, making the system the most accessible gaming console ever created.

You can’t say none of these games are for you
